What moth treatment costs in Chicago

A moth job can be one wardrobe in one bedroom, or it can be four rooms, three wool rugs and a storage closet. Those are not the same piece of work, and a company that quotes them at the same number is either overcharging the first customer or planning to revise the price on the second once they are through the door.

The six things that actually set the price

• How many separate places are infested. The largest single factor. A contained problem in one wardrobe is straightforward. Damage in a bedroom, a hall rug and a storage closet means three sources and the routes between them.
• Which moth it is. Clothes moths in textiles and pantry moths in dry goods are completely different jobs. Pantry moths mean going through a kitchen's stores; clothes moths mean going through storage, rug backs and the voids where larvae pupate.
• What the textiles are. A hand-knotted rug, a cashmere collection or a designer's install has to come through the treatment unmarked, which means working around pile, dye and backing rather than treating a baseboard. That is slower and it takes more care.
• Access and preparation. A wardrobe emptied and a room where the furniture can be moved is a faster visit than one where it cannot. We tell you what is worth doing beforehand, and doing it genuinely reduces the work.
• Whether monitoring is needed. Most jobs want pheromone traps left down and a look back to confirm the catch has stopped. Where that is needed it is quoted at the start, as part of the job.
• Single home or a building. In a multi-unit building where the problem has moved between units, the work has to be coordinated across them, and one unit treated in isolation rarely holds.

How the price is actually arrived at

We come and look. We confirm what you have — which, as the moths-or-carpet-beetles guide explains, is not a formality, because a good share of “moth damage” turns out not to be moths. Then you get the price for the whole job in writing, along with what we would do and what you need to do first.

Nothing starts until you have agreed that figure, and it does not move afterwards. The follow-up, where a job needs one, is inside it. Every job is priced before the work starts. You hear the number, you decide, and nothing begins until you say so.

There is no contract attached to any of this. No contracts, no annual plans, no auto-renewals. We come when you need us — that is the whole arrangement.

Comparing us against a rug cleaner's price

If you have searched this already you will have seen rug specialists advertising moth treatment from around a hundred dollars, and wondered why a pest control company will not match it. It is a fair question with a straightforward answer: those are two different jobs, and the prices are not comparable.

A rug cleaner treats the rug. It goes to their premises, gets washed, gets a mothproofing treatment, sometimes gets repaired, and comes back clean. For a rug that picked up moths somewhere else and is the only affected thing you own, that may be exactly and only what you need — and we will say so.

We treat the place the rug lives in: finding every source in the property, the harbourage, the voids where larvae pupate, and the other textiles nobody has checked yet. If moths are established in the room, a beautifully cleaned rug goes straight back into the infestation that ate it.

Where you can save money

• Call earlier. Moth damage compounds quietly over a storage season. The job at the first few holes is smaller than the job in April.
• Do the preparation. Emptying storage and moving what can be moved shortens the visit.
• Check the whole property before we come. Finding the second source yourself is cheaper than a return visit for it.
• Do not treat blind. The most expensive moth jobs we see are the ones where somebody has been buying products and treating the wrong insect, in the wrong place, for a year.
