Drain Flies treatment in Chicago
Small fuzzy moth-like flies breeding in drain film. Kill the film and you kill the problem.
Drain flies — also called moth flies — are small, fuzzy and hold their wings over the body like a tiny moth. They are weak, fluttery fliers, usually spotted resting on walls near a sink or floor drain.
They breed in the gelatinous organic film that builds up inside drains, traps, and under floor drain covers. That film is the entire problem. As long as it is there, you can kill every adult fly in the building and have a fresh generation within days.
In restaurants, bars and commercial kitchens the usual sources are floor drains, the area under bar mats, mop sinks and grease traps. In homes it is most often a seldom-used shower, basement floor drain or utility sink.
Treatment is drain-focused: identify the breeding drains, break down the film with a bio-enzymatic product rather than bleach, and confirm with follow-up monitoring. Bleach runs straight through and leaves the film intact, which is why it never works.

- Consistent numbers appearing in the same room each morning
- Activity concentrated around a drain that gets little use
How we treat them
- Tape test to pinpoint exactly which drains are breeding
- Bio-enzymatic drain treatment to break down the organic film
- Trap, cover and grease-trap inspection in commercial kitchens
- Follow-up monitoring to confirm breeding has stopped
Common questions
Will bleach get rid of drain flies?
No. Bleach runs straight through the drain and leaves the organic film — the actual breeding site — in place. It needs a product that digests the film.
How do I find which drain is the source?
Tape a piece of clear tape sticky-side down over the drain overnight, leaving a gap for airflow. Adults emerging get stuck to it. We do this as standard on commercial jobs.
